December 2014 Rider of the Month

Rick Hermelin ElliptiGORick Hermelin has been named the December 2014 ElliptiGO Rider of the Month after completing an inspirational year of riding that saw Rick cover 10,000 miles for 2014. This is just the latest in a long list of accomplishments Rick can add to his resume, as surpassing expectations is nothing new for him. In 2012, Rick rode nearly 3,000 miles across the U.S. in 100 Days, raising more than $11,500 for the Semper Fi Fund. He followed up that record-setting year by completing 12 centuries in 2013. Always looking for more personal challenges and ways to keep himself active, Rick is an inspiration to the ElliptiGO community and we want to recognize his determination and strength of spirit. See you on the roads, Rick!

Quick Facts About Rick & His Accomplishment

1. What inspired you to ride 10,000 miles in a year or when did you realize it was possible?
During the May Ride Every Day Challenge I ended up averaging over 30 miles a day and just continued doing that most days until today. I knew then that I would have a good chance to get to 10,000 miles by the end of the year.

2. How often did you ride in order to accomplish this goal?
I had started riding almost every day in April to get ready for the May Challenge and rode almost every day I was home except for a few days because of the weather.

3. What were your longest and shortest rides? What was your favorite?
My longest during the year was 73 miles on my 73rd birthday and the shortest was 8.8 miles.

4. How old are you and do you think this kind of achievement is possible for many other ElliptiGO riders?
I am 73 and will turn 74 next February 11. While it is possible for other ElliptiGO riders to do this, I don’t think that many others would be willing or able to invest the time.

5. What are your ElliptiGO-related goals for the next year?
I have not set any goals for 2015 yet, but a possible one is to increase the goal to 12,000 miles. My goals seem to assert themselves as a result of events in my life. I have never been one to make new year resolutions.
