The 2014 ElliptiGO Winter Classic
January 18 & 19, 2014
~ Phoenix, Arizona ~
The First Annual ElliptiGO Winter Classic was an epic experience for the group of riders who participated. The weather could not have been better as the competitors gathered near South Mountain for the ride to the 5 mile race start. Nerves were a little tense as the group realized they would have to ride back up the hill they'd just ridden down to the start.
This race boasts one of the most enjoyable courses we've raced on not only because it’s cut off from traffic, but because the variation in terrain and lots of turns made it fun to ride. Out of the gate, an initial quick descent allowed a lead pack of 7 ElliptiGO riders to reach speeds in excess of 30 mph, which spread out the field immediately. Within the first mile, Bill Pinnell had opened up a gap on Darren Brown and the chase pack, but Darren closed quickly and led for the entire second half of the race, finishing over a minute ahead of the field. In the women’s race, Anna Thatcher charged out and delivered a fantastic performance, finishing in under 20 minutes to claim the women’s title.
After the race, about half the competitors took on the 1,000-foot climb up South Mountain. The following morning, everyone enjoyed riding in streets closed to traffic on the Rock 'n' Roll AZ race course right before the runners started. It was a truly fun time, so put this event on your calendar for next year and plan to join us in sunny Arizona!
Below are the race results and a few photos. Thank you to Bill Pinnell for letting us use some of his photos from the day!
